What About This? Part II

After writing this post, I found myself with three requests from various friends for a similar treatment. I was a bit overwhelmed. But what am I really doing with my time? Nothing. Well cleaning my apartment and going through my sweaters and looking for jobs and catching up on the episodes of Pushing Daisies that I've missed, but those tasks definitely don't take up all the hours in my day.

Second up is another friend from college. She is currently a medical school student and is a hair under 5'1". Her medical school, situated below the Mason-Dixon line, is the kind of place where 70 degree days are not uncommon in March, so we are light on the coats and the sweaters. And instead of work attire we have I have to sit in long classes attire. My choices are littered with light, feminine touches. Bows and ruffles and prints.

I love sundresses, and I hate that I have to put them away for a large chunk of the year. I'm only mildly jealous that she can wear pieces like this for so many more days.

A simple, flat pair of sandals with an ankle strap that helps define a part of the body that can sometimes get lost in a flat shoe.

Everyone needs a pair of dark denim. I like these jeans for her because they come a secret mechanism that allows you to change length based on whether you are wearing flat or heeled shoes or just happen to be shorter than average.

The neckline of this sweater adds interest while the color and cut move it into the wardrobe staple pile. Besides, thin sweaters are great for lectures. Seriously, why are lecture halls always like 10 degrees too cold?

A simple pair of black flats with a sole made for long walks through campus.

I carried a book bag through my senior year of college because I am a dork. And let's be honest, if I ever went back to school, I would probably find myself fighting the urge to strap one to my back. Most people, however, moved on to carrying their books in totes. This one can stand up on its own. The navy takes you out of the normal black/brown doldrums. And you could totally fit a stethoscope in there.

For post-class partying, the dark, versatile jeans can be left on and worn with this top.

And these boots, after a quick adjustment of the jeans' hem. Because really, when you're learning how to save lives, having clothes that play more than one function is important. There's no time for complete wardrobe changes if you still want to have some semblance of a life.

Can't forget about the clutch.

Apparently in grad school, there are still formals. When we were freshmen in college, let's just say that our formals dresses were leftover examples of high school princess complexes. We've all, thankfully, grown beyond that. This dress, by her favorite label, BCBG, is perfect for those types of events. Gowns can really swallow up a person. Especially a person short in stature. And they can quickly age a young person. For someone of her height and our age, it's always better to go short. Not booty short. Tasteful short.

She and I are both Louboutin girls, so I couldn't leave this post without a pair. These shoes are classic. And the built-in platform adds extra height without the added pain.

A few months ago, she asked me where to find a soft and light necklace. A small boutique was my answer. Online boutiques work as well. At least, that's where I found this necklace.

So it took me forever to get the second edition done. Life got in the way. But the third edition shouldn't take as long. Well, it probably shouldn't take as long. Who am I kidding? Things have been fucking nuts recently. It could come tomorrow or three weeks from now. But I promise it will be here.

Requiem

The jeans are dead.

On the way home after getting a drink at a local bar tonight, I slipped. I was stone cold sober and a block and a half away from my front door. I had slipped in these shoes before. In fact, I was wearing the same pair of jeans. But this time, I almost performed a split. As I began to collect myself, I noticed a huge rip at the right knee of the jeans. Maybe I could have lived with that. But the crotch had also experienced a tear that could not be fixed. As I further assessed the damage, I realized that I had also torn through the tights I had put on underneath my jeans to keep out the cold. And to make matters worse, I had lost a good amount of skin to the pavement. I sat on the ground for two minutes. As I limped home, I reconciled myself with the end.

After I entered my apartment and turned on the light, I stripped them off for the final time. The inside was stained with the blood that had poured from my knee. I left them on the floor and made my way to the bathroom to tend to my wound.

Now to find a new pair to break in and make my own.

Bullseye

When I first moved to Brooklyn, I spent a large amount of time at the nearby Target. Only a quick walk away, I find myself indulging far too often. I go for a pack of paper towels, a Vogue follows me home. I replenish my constantly disappearing sock collection and grab a $10 copy of the Ocean's Eleven DVD at the register (believe me, that has paid for itself many times over). I throw a pair of cheap flats into my cart with a bottle of laundry detergent.

In recent years, the store with the red and white bullseye has expanded its fashion offerings. First with their ongoing collaborations with Isaac Mizrahi and Liz Lange. Then by introducing capsule collections from the newest and hottest designers in both accessories and ready-to-wear. The designers got more name recognition in the middle of the nation while Target set itself up to compete with the likes of H&M and Old Navy. Yesterday, while stocking up on paper towels and body wash, I made my way through the clothing, shoe and accessory sections finding things that I liked.

From their most recent GO International collaboration with Jonathan Saunders, I found this dress. It's simple and chic and perfect for the many jobs I imagine myself having, hopefully sooner as opposed to later.

I'm a big fan of Sigerson Morrison flats. It's nice to find a pair that I can actually afford.

I have an unexplainable fascination with leaf earrings that finds me drawn to this pair from the Dean Harris collaboration.

My wardrobe is still lacking in the blouse department. And with Isaac Mizrahi on his way out the door, it would probably be wise to pick this one up as soon as possible.

Sweater dresses are versatile and toasty all at once. And this pattern is one that I find myself able to deal with.

I'm generally anti-plaid, but this jacket totally fits in with the equestrian moment that I am having.

During my two previous trips to Target (one for gum and the other for Halloween candy), I picked up this bag and thought about how nicely it would get along with all the other bags that I have at home. This trip was no different.

These pumps have a Mad Men vibe that I love. And a sensible heel. And they looked really pretty on me when I tried them on before making my way to the last of the Halloween candy.

More equestrian touches for those rainy days.

Whew, that was long. Has anyone actually made it to the end of this post? See, this is what happens when I go to Target. Total craziness ensues. Total affordable craziness.

Yes We Can!

This horrifically long election cycle ends today! And I'll be wearing this:
